Please see below the 'wonderings', why this module is important and what understandings your child will develop as a result of this module.

 

Nursery

Our WonderingHow does the past make us who we are today?
Why is this module important?Abernant Primary is not largely diverse so providing experiences, and teaching and learning of diversity is hugely beneficial for them. It is important for young learners to understand their own identity prior to understanding the identify of others. The module will create a sense of belonging and cynefin.
What understandings will my child develop?
  • Recognise what identity means
  • Describe my own identity
  • Recognise where I belong
  • Describe how I am similar and/or different to others.
  • Understand they have a right to an identity, name & nationality.

 

Reception & Year 1

Our WonderingHow does the past make us who we are today?
Why is this module important?Abernant Primary is not largely diverse so providing experiences, and teaching and learning of diversity is hugely beneficial for them. The children will be building on chronology, change & continuity from previous learning but in a different context.
What understandings will my child develop?
  • Use chronological language to talk about my/the past.
  • Identify similarities and differences between life now and in the past (incl. RVE)
  • Understand how life/community has changed over time. 
  • Understand that Aberdare has different people and groups (incl. RVE).
  • Describe similarities and differences between people in Aberdare/school (incl. RVE)

 

Year 2 & 3

 

Our WonderingDo we need rules?
Why is this module important?I want them to understand that rules help keep us safe in school, life and the wider world.
What understandings will my child develop?Looking at cause and effect, exploring the key events which may have changed the local community. Through identity and belonging, understand how people show they belong to a community. Pupils will explore the concept of Authority and understand that people in Wales/UK have the right to vote for someone (Governance)

 

Year 4

Our WonderingWhat do we believe and why?
Why is this module important?It will help the children to understand their place in place in history and how religion has shaped Wales.
What understandings will my child develop?The study of chronology shows how religions have changed over time. Understanding our modern sense of identity and belonging involves making simple comparisons and connections between the features of historical periods and today, both locally and globally. Discuss how change and continuity has helped to shape Wales today. Understanding justice, inequality and rights includes knowing how individuals demonstrate care, concern and respect when thinking about religions and beliefs.

 

Year 5 & 6

Our Wondering

Can one person change the world?

Why is this module important?This inquiry is important for our children because they do not think that their voice matters. This topic is designed to empower them and show how they are connected. With the election for the labour leader coming up in March, it will be important for the children to understand their responsibility in regards to voting for the leader of Wales.
What understandings will my child develop?
  • Wales is connected to countries around the world and we are all connected.
  • Understand and recognise how countries are governed and who the authority figure is.
  • Recognise how countries are diverse and why.
  • Describe how decisions made by individuals have a cause and effect on other locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Discuss how there is inequality, equality and justice around the world.
  • Explain how it is our responsibility to look after our world through voting/taking action.
  • Recognise that I can use ethical and moral questions to gain a deeper understanding.
